Pamela Anderson urges AIIMS to retire aging monkeys

Pamela AndersonHollywood actress Pamela Anderson has recently urged All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi, to retire aging monkeys at its research facilities and complained of various other issues faced by different animals there.

Writing on behalf of People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India, the ‘Barb-Wire’ star said in a letter to AIIMS Director R C Deka that aging monkeys at the institute’s Central Animal Facility should be retired to a sanctuary and they should switch to ‘modern, humane non-animal research and training methods.’

A PETA India release said that Anderson pointed out in her letter that the monkeys ‘languished’ in cramped, rusty cages and that one monkey had been caged for about 20 years.

"Anderson sent the letter on behalf of PETA India after watching video footage taken secretly inside AIIMS," the release said.

"The animals suffering behind closed doors at AIIMS must endure this nightmare every day. I was shocked to see that rabbits are forced to live in wire-floored cages, the sharp wire digs into their sensitive footpads and can cause their feet to become stuck," said Anderson.

“Sick and injured animals were ‘denied veterinary care’ and animals exhibited signs of severe stress,” she said.
